2010 Wood chop

Over two hundred people attended the annual Lyonville Wood Chop on a perfect Saturday in February. Apart from the wood chops, attractions included a barbeque, produce stall, raffle, bar and spinning wheel. Children’s races and gumboot throwing were fiercely contested and the ladies nail driving competition was won by local personality, Amanda. Each year the chopped wood is auctioned and the wood delivered to the home of the successful bidder. Over $3000 was raised for the day.

Successful axemen included:
  • Under 18 Championship: B. Meyer
  • Bremner Memorial Chop: G. Hansford
  • Gleeson Memorial Chop: G. Hansford
  • Olsen memorial Chop: J. Deverell
  • 10” Combination: B Haines
  • Lyonville Championship: B. Haines
  • Cross Cut: B. Price and R. Hopper
  • Bill Moloney Trophy: B. Haines
Thanks to:
- The sponsors who continue to support us each year. The day would not be so successful without you.
- The axemen who turn up year after year and give all they’ve got.
- All the volunteers who give their time to help on the day and especially the hard working Hall Committee whose effort is very much appreciated.

The Wood Chop is held every year in early February. It is a great opportunity to meet with other Lyonvillians in a relaxed and enjoyable way. So keep an eye out for next year’s date and volunteer as a helper or come along as a spectator and support this local event.

History

Lyonville was established as a timber cutting  settlement and many champion axemen came from the region.
